Dynes Transport (Tapanui) Ltd was formed in February 1969 when twin brothers Jim and John Dynes purchased the five truck operation of Cooper Transport Ltd at Tapanui.
A neighbouring general carrier also with five trucks, Pomahaka Transport was purchased in 1974. In mid 1976 a strategic decision was made to exit general freight in favour of concentrating on the blossoming forestry industry. The general carrying business was sold and the new venture launched with three trucks carting wood chips from local sawmills to Port Chalmers. From there the business expanded into log cartage.
An opportunity to expand the business presented itself when TD Haulage of Tauranga, who also specialised in wood chip cartage, was placed on the market and subsequently acquired. John moved to Tauranga to run the new company while Jim remained in Tapanui.
Two years later the North and South Island operations were split with John taking total ownership of the north and Jim and his wife Anita the south.
Dynes Transport (Tapanui) Ltd remains a family owned and operated company with the present directors being Jim, Anita and their son Peter. Daughters Debra and Shona are also employed by the company.
The enlarged group of companies has the resources of 150 people and 100 trucks at their disposal.
Subsequent opportunities presented themselves which enabled "The Group" to become involved in dairy cartage, log cartage, raw milk cartage, milk powder cartage and chip cartage to name a few. |
